Kermit Ruffins/Irvin Mayfield: A Beautiful World

A Beautiful World is all about celebration: the 20th anniversary of Basin Street Records, the coming together of New Orleans mainstays and the resilience of the city itself. Famed trumpeters Irvin Mayfield and Kermit Ruffins helmed the production which includes more than 50 other musicians and was bolstered by funding from the New Orleans Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. With a long list of guests, including the Rebirth Brass Band, Dr. Michael White and Jason Marsalis—many of them from the label’s roste —they’ve cooked up a nonstop party of a record here, with nearly every track featuring a walk-on from someone of importance in the NOLA scene. Connected by several brief interludes of around a minute in length, the jam-packed jams, at their best, blow the roof off: “Footwork,” featuring both Rebirth and Cyril Neville, is all drums, chanting and tuba street-parade style, while “Sister Soul,” is what you might’ve gotten if Barry White went reggae. “Lexine” belongs on the contemporary R&B charts, and the cover of Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry Be Happy” strays just far enough from that classic’s roots to get a certified Big Easy stamp across its face. “Just Playin’” is the kind of good-time blast that you can hear sneaking out onto the street on any given evening in this music-infatuated town. Ain’t nothing like it anywhere else.
