Joan of Arc: 1984

Who doesn’t love good old-fashioned folktronica? Singer Melina Ausikaitis—who got the best line on Joan of Arc’s prior album with “Please be advised upon entry to my friendship/ You are consenting to be photographed”—steps definitively to the fore on the art rockers’ new 1984. Accompanied by spare electronics and subtle vocal distortions, she sings autobiographical songs about her wrong-side-of-the tracks upbringing in a thick twang, with bandleader Tim Kinsella providing eerie offstage tweaks and distortions.
