Jessie Baylin: Dark Place

Sweetness and sexiness are often contrary concepts for a singer-songwriter, but that balancing act is the soul of Jessie Baylin’s fourth album. On “All That I Can Do,” the LP’s lushly orchestrated centerpiece, she drapes her honeyed croon around glistening xylophones and boomy drums—a lustful lullaby. Dark Place finds Baylin re-teaming with producer-collaborator Richard Swift, an expert soundsmith with a knack for nailing the nuances of specific eras. “To Hell and Back” is confessional folk, full of atmospheric guitars framing the singer’s naked voice; “Kiss Your Face” is synthpop styled with dreamy chord changes. Baylin sounds natural navigating any style—but she’s too smart to ignore her sweet spot. Dark Place concludes with “Do You Wanna Dance,” a ballroom ballad built on canned strings and milky piano. “Do ya wanna dance with me, baby?” she asks over and over, her voice dissolving into reverb. May I cut in?
