Jaimoe has spent the better part of his career as one of two drummers in the Allman Brothers Band, an institution that he helped found in 1969. But with his Jasssz Band – a septet that, to be clear, handles multiple genres, including jazz – he is the sole percussionist, which allows his light, uncluttered style to shine through. As evidenced by his work with the Allmans, though, Jaimoe is all about the band, and the focus here is most often on the ensemble as a whole. “Laurie Ann Blue,” by Jasssz Band guitarist Junior Mack, is a soulful jazz ballad marked by a thoughtful, questing solo from saxophonist Kris Jensen (on soprano). And “Rainy Night in Georgia” features a strong-butaching lead vocal from Mack.
