Great Caesar’s Ghost: Dragonfly
Dragonfly, a collection of well-known covers and two original cuts, marks Great Caesar’s Ghost’s return to the studio after losing founding guitarist Ray Penney in 2012. While the Long Island, N.Y., band is best known for their ability to confidently interpret classic-era American music with pronounced precision, the two originals on this double disc (the stoner funk “Show Of Hands” and the peachy, Allmans-nodding instrumental “Dragonfly”) are the most intriguing songs in the mix. On Neil Young’s “Cortez The Killer” and a pair of Allmans covers, the quintet shows a learned and deep understanding of the originals, lending their Southern-tinged blues sound to each cut. The breezy reading of the Miles Davis classic “So What” is a notable gear shift from mostly hard-chugging blues and Southern-psych sounds to a more intricate jazz style. Dragonfly is a worthy listen for Allman Brothers fans and those looking to hear reinterpretations of a handful of canonized classics.
