Grateful Dead: Giants Stadium 1987/1989/1991

For the Grateful Dead’s latest box set, a 14-CD monster collection of five shows during a three-year span, the band chose to zoom in on New Jersey’s Giants Stadium, just outside of New York City. Somehow it provided a fertile ground in the band’s later years for incredible, inspired performances at the stadium level—and you can hear it brimming on pretty much every song throughout. The collection opens with a show from July ‘87, days after In the Dark was released. Jerry Garcia was healthy and revived and you can hear it in upbeat versions of “Bertha” and the gorgeous version of “Morning Dew” that opens the second set. Highlights are stacked throughout, but here’s a rundown of some that stand out immediately: A random “Feel Like a Stranger”> “Franklin’s Tower” opener and “Iko Iko” with members of The Neville Brothers joining from the July 10, 1989 show; the 13-minute version of “Shakedown Street” from July 9, 1989; Bob Weir’s powerful vocals on beloved Dylan classics like “Queen Jane Approximately,” “Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again” and “When I Paint My Masterpiece.” And the June 17, 1991 show was the stuff of legends. Things kicked off with “Eyes of the World” and “Dark Star” showed up four different times throughout the night. Some were merely just extended teases, but the band just didn’t do things like this—not in the ‘90s. But this night, they did. For those who’d rather have some of this on vinyl, the band offered up that “Dark Star” night as a 5-LP set. Whatever your preference, this release feels like something special—there’s more punch and pizazz throughout, and the theme is interesting too. Giants Stadium was inspiring to the band and these nights proved it over and over.
