Gang of Four: Content

Gang of Four’s first album of new material in 16 years is a bittersweet affair: the good news is that it’s filled with mostly powerful music. The new songs may not have the seismic impact of those on the 1978 debut ( “Damaged Goods,” “Anthrax” ) but they’re respectably potent. The down side is that only vocalist Jon King and guitarist Andy Gill remain from the original lineup – as the founding rhythm section dropped out of the reunion a few years back. Nonetheless, tracks like “Who Am I?,” “Do as I Say” and “You Don’t Have To Be Mad” pack a reasonably weighty wallop, and the sharp shards of guitar and fierce post-punk/funk tailor to the sensibilities of a new era. And although the barbed commentary of yore is toned down a few notches, Gang of Four still speaks loudly and clearly.
