Flying Lotus: You’re Dead!

Ryan Reed on October 28, 2014

Flying Lotus’ fifth LP opens with a psychedelic carnival ride of Fender Rhodes riffs, popping bass runs, liquid sax and sizzling cymbals. Steven Ellison, the man behind the mindfuck, has always used jazz music as one ingredient in his electronic stew, but on You’re Dead!, it’s his main touchstone, aiming for organic fusion futurism through a pseudo-concept album about the afterlife. Aiding in that far-out quest is bass fiend (and frequent collaborator) Thundercat, rapper Kendrick Lamar and keyboard legend Herbie Hancock—the elite foundation of a small overdub army, adding frenetic solos, deft rhymes, and lush textures to epics like “Cold Dead” and the digital nightmare “Dead Man’s Tetris.” Ellison said his goal was to make a “jazz record that would fuck (Miles Davis) up.” He’s certainly succeeded.
