Dinosaur Jr.: Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not

Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not is the 11th full-length album from Dinosaur Jr. since their formation in 1984, and it reveals the results of both an evolution and a resolute consistency. Since the group’s 1985 debut, Dinosaur, J Mascis and company have created American rock songs that equally emphasize fluid melodies and raw distortion. This album, like the band’s past three releases since their reformation in 2005, reveals practiced songwriting that is wholly confident in its delivery. The musicians here are so good at their instruments and Mascis has honed his lyrics so perfectly that there is space for exploration without getting too sidetracked from Dinosaur Jr.’s signature rock style. Crooner “Be a Part” rambles through its folksy, twanging melody without ever feeling lost while “I Walk for Miles” sends surging guitar riffs driving under Mascis’ voice, giving it a sludge-metal tinge. The album deepens the level of trust between Dinosaur Jr. and their fans, offering a reminder that the alt-rock pioneers generally fail to disappoint. The album concludes with “Left/Right,” a soulful number on which Mascis poignantly asserts, “My fate is my fate/ I’ll lie back and wait.” It’s like he knows something the rest of us don’t, and music is the best way of trying to explain it.
