From out of the Akron/Family cloud floats Dana Buoy, a fresh alter ego for drummer Dana Janssen whose Summer Bodies debut lights purposefully for territory that even the freeriding Akrons haven’t quite reached yet. During the album’s first half, Janssen tries his hand at glossy, modern pop that hardly needs a qualifier of “psych” or even “indie.” While he Janssen might
comfortably anchor Akron/Family’s wild improv sessions, songs like “So Lucky” and “Call To Be” are jams in a very different sense of the word; and it’s truly Justin Beiber’s loss if he never records “Come To My Side.” After a short sound collage interlude ( “Untitled 1” ), the album’s second half returns Janssen’s Buoy to the more familiar world of love and space and puddles of gorgeous moonlight ( “Futures Part” ) and piled harmonies ( “We on the Sea” ). It’s hard to tell which side of the music is dreaming of the other.
