Continental Drifters: Drifted: In the Beginning & Beyond

Today, they’d be considered Americana superheroes, but in their own time—that being the ‘90s—this ragtag band of singers, songwriters and superior musicians didn’t get nearly as much attention as they deserved. The membership shifted around often—high-profile contributors included Peter Holsapple (dB’s), Susan Cowsill (Cowsills), Mark Walton (Dream Syndicate) and Vicki Peterson (Bangles)—and their home base jumped from LA to New Orleans, but Continental Drifters managed somehow to create a unified body of soulful, roots-rock work while they lasted. This double-disc collection focuses first on the band’s early output, centered around the songwriting and vocal interactions of Carlo Nuccio, Gary Eaton and Ray Ganucheau—mostly solid rock with a roadhouse country bent (Eaton’s “Match Made in Heaven,” Holsapple’s “Invisible Boyfriend”). But it’s disc two that provides the most fun, as the Continental Drifters put their spin on tunes from sources as diverse as The Beach Boys, Michael Nesmith, Neil Young, Gram Parsons and several by Fairport Convention.
