Bottle Rockets: South Broadway Athletic Club

Make no mistake: Consistency doesn’t need to exclude creativity, especially when doled out by a band that continues to craft a singularly compelling sound. After nearly 23 years and a dozen albums, the Bottle Rockets have affirmed this axiom, maintaining their position as alt-country champs while navigating their way forward. Wilco and Uncle Tupelo may have grabbed the glory and notoriety, but regardless, this St. Louis-based quartet continue to ply a workman-like regimen that’s as fresh and vital as the day they started. True to form, South Broadway Athletic Club shows their knack for muscular melodies and the kind of riveting refrains to which every Americana ensemble ought to aspire. With a mix of robust rockers, feisty insurgency and breezy humility, producer Eric Ambel ensures the energy never falters, even when the band is expressing the angst and frustration of their blue-collar contingent. Even while insisting, “I’m gonna sit down and do nuthin’/ Big fat nuthin’/ Stay up late doin’ nuthin’/ All night long” on the would-be ode to immobility, “Big Fat Nuthin’,” their irrepressible attitude remains. Likewise, though “Building Chryslers” draws on apathy over ambition, its edgy insolence stays intact. Driven and determined, the Bottle Rockets have unscrewed another vintage brew.
