Boards of Canada: Tomorrow’s Harvest

Boards of Canada’s genius has always lied in their ability to manipulate the listener’s feelings. While Tomorrow’s Harvest is similar to previous releases, it doesn’t quite rise to the same heights of emotional complexity. Whereas past albums saw the duo mastering the art of tension and release, much of the tension on this record builds up to a fizzle. Its not a bad album. It’s beautifully produced and there are some real standouts like “Cold Earth,” “Nothing is Real,” “New Seeds” and “Reach for the Dead,” but the overarching theme of an impending (or maybe a past) Apocalypse is always there, perhaps a bit too overtly. Tomorrow’s Harvest is definitely a solid release, although it’s not the transcendent masterpiece we were hoping for after eight years.
