Big Light: Animals In Bloom

Big Light’s full-length debut is full of cool sounds, warm harmonies and giant hooks that could easily land the San Francisco club-favorites some steady rotation on forward-thinking radio stations. Frontman Fred Torphy’s songwriting strikes deep in an economical manner and it’s easy to imagine co-eds singing “Monster” or “Bonebreaker” in dorm rooms. But under the inviting exterior lives an experimental streak in budding guitar star Jeremy Korpas’ unique, melodic approach. There are few traditional solos here, the band instead opting for big picture sonic tapestries that vaguely recall Wilco and Eisenhower era Slip; and though it’s more indie than jam, there’s a moment in the over six-minute “Heavy” that is primo space rock. Animals In Bloom confirms the buzz: Big Light is a band to keep an eye on.
