Appalachian Excitation: Arnold Dreyblatt and Megafaun

Like your minimalism with a human face? Try a little Appalachian Excitation (Northern Spy), a hippie-disco instrumental hoedown involving the esteemed
Berlin-based composer Arnold Dreyblatt and North Carolina folk-rock weirdos Megafaun. Using instruments tuned according to just-intonation specs—don’t ask—Dreyblatt’s “Home Hat Placement,” with its hard hickory groove, suggests a backwoods Glenn Branca or Rhys Chatham. Dreyblatt’s modified bass in “Edge Observation” evokes drone master LaMonte Young strolling through the pines. And the 11-minute “Radiator” hints at Television’s “Marquee Moon” amid its many short sections.
