Andy Frasco and the U.N.: Change of Pace

Andy Frasco is looking for a Change of Pace. As the jam scene’s new resident merrymaker, he’s made a habit of crowd-surfing and booze-chugging his way from coast to coast. And though his shows with his equally amped-up backing band The U.N. are consistently celebratory, in the immortal words of Prince: “Parties weren’t meant to last.” On this new record, Frasco focuses more on his craft, trading the raucous energy of prior fan-favorites like “Smoking Dope and Rock n’ Roll” for the hopeful vibe of tracks like “Let Your Mind Be Free” (urging the listener to “stay woke,” “speak up” and “stay humble”) and “Waiting Game,” which overflows with true love and patience. The title track, inspired by Frasco’s blossoming kinship with Leftover Salmon frontman Vince Herman, allows Frasco to get as country as his Los Angeles roots will allow while crooning about getting a house out in the mountains. His funloving DNA is still there, but there’s a certain maturity creeping in that will stick around long after last call. Frasco will always be a party animal, but on Change of Pace , he proves that he’s no one-trick pony. And if he follows in the footsteps of his pal Herman, then he’ll be enjoying plenty of good times on the festival circuit for decades to come. Plus, with a farewell “fuck you” to the skeptics on album-closer “Don’t Let the Haters Get You Down,” it seems like Frasco and company are ready for anything life may throw their way.
