Formula 5: Live at the Palace Theatre

One of the greatest parts about being a music fan in the modern age is the ability to enjoy—and obsess over—high-definition audio of live performances. This fact rings particularly true when the performance in question holds some personal importance to the artist. For jamband Formula 5, it’s pretty obvious that their November 2018 slot opening for the Disco Biscuits in their hometown of Albany, N.Y. was the biggest performance of their career. However, what makes Live at the Palace Theatre especially poignant is knowing that the band is going on indefinite hiatus after this summer. “Playing music for all of you has been, and is, the most soulfully rewarding experience we could have ever imagined,” F5 wrote on March 6, explaining their decision to disband for the time being. So now, simultaneously considering the band’s uncertain future and the importance of this gig, Live at the Palace Theatre may as well be F5’s love letter to their fans and their band. Sure, the vocals are a bit shaky; considering the magnitude of the performance, can you blame them? But what really shines on this release is the quartet’s hard-fought musical cohesion. Their seamless transition between “In the Sand” and “Sad Bed,” for example, somehow shifts from gothic piano motifs to tropical soundscapes, and it totally works. On the crescendoing “Booher’s Pass,” there is a palpable sense of excitement as Joe Davis rips into shreddy guitar solo after guitar solo. And yet, somehow, they manage to stop the song on a dime. It’s always a bummer when a band drifts apart, but at least Live at the Palace Theatre is a hope-filled snapshot of Formula 5 at their most ambitious.
