Streets Of Laredo
“It’s like Bob Dylan running late to a Ramones concert,” Daniel Gibson says as he explains the sound of New Zealand-turned-Brooklyn indie-rockers Streets Of Laredo. “I thought that was really funny and was like, ‘Man, it’s kind of true,’” he says. In addition to Daniel, the three-headed Gibson family attack also includes his siblings Dave and Sarahjane, and they all serve as principal songwriters. When the conversation shifts to the natural quibbles that arise when immersed in family life for too long, Daniel admits, “We’ve had fights sometimes but when we get into the studio together and we get into that collaborative process together, it works smoothly.” Their debut effort, Volume I & II, features 10 tracks that touch on all of the band’s influences. As Daniel explains. “You’ve got your Cat Stevens going on, you’ve got your Arcade Fire, and then, you’ve got your Grizzly Bear. All the kind of bands we listen to.” The single, “Girlfriend,” strikes a personal
chord with the Gibson family, as it details their adventurous move to New York City. “I started thinking about New York being that kind of tough mistress,” he says. “She’s just this wild chick that you can’t control.”
