Little May
New Music, Old Friends
Sydney, Australia
It hasn’t taken long for Australian outfit Little May to explode onto the international music scene, but their relationship actually dates back further than their music. Lead guitarist Annie Hamilton has known drummer Kat Hunter since they were five, and vocalists Liz Drummond and Hannah Field met in high school. “None of us had ever really been in bands before,” says Hamilton. “It all just slotted together really naturally. Everything we were all doing seemed to be working.” With tight harmonies and expressive hooks, the group quickly gained national acclaim and began bringing their show to other countries, which proved to be a different, but familiar-feeling, experience. “It’s very weird for us to come to somewhere like Philly and have people turning up because they know our music,” says Hamilton. “But it’s nice, because it’s like going back to the kind of gigs that we were playing maybe, like a year ago, in Sydney.” For their full-length debut, For the Company, Little May landed their dream producer, The National’s Aaron Dessner. “At first, we were all definitely very starstruck,” Hamilton admits. “But he was trying to find what Little May was at its core and then build the record around that. I think he did a really good job.”
