A Jamband that Doesn’t Play Hippie Music

The members of Jounce started playing music together in grade school jazz band. Formed in 2000 as 33 West, they soon discovered that a Virginia punk-rock band had the same name, so they turned to the dictionary and selected “jounce” – a word that denotes a sharp jolt or bounce. “We’re the kind of rock band that can be aggressive but also have a little bit of funk that really makes you move around,” says bassist Danny Tamberelli. Jounce plays experimental and improvisational rock, while drawing on influences like The Slip, the Benevento-Russo Duo and Tortoise. This spring it will be touring in support of its new album, which Tamberelli says differs from 2006’s self-titled debut as in that it’s a “cohesive album from start to finish – a complete thought.” The record also features longtime friends Marco Benevento and Tom Hamilton on several tracks. “We’ve been told that we’re a jamband that doesn’t play hippie music,” Tamberelli says. Perhaps that’s the new definition of jounce.
