On All My Relations, the crushing seventh album from Lightning Bolt drummer Brian Chippendale’s Black Pus, punishing percussion and flattening bass blasts threaten to bury the leader’s loopy, maniacal vocals. But they also threaten to swallow up the listener, whose senses are no match for Chippendale’s brand of noisy madness. “It’s been years of this loud party-rock or something,” says Chippendale on his work with Lightning Bolt and Black Pus. “It’s such a satisfying situation. You get lost in it. It’s effective as a tool to take you out of your everyday life.” With Pus, though, Chippendale rocks the party alone. Onstage and in the studio with that project, the Rhode Island resident can be found simultaneously singing, drumming and pulling lawnmower low-end tones from an oscillator on his kit. “One person has been fun for me because I can be the tyrant of the quote-unquote band,” explains Chippendale with a laugh. “It’s nice in that I can make every decision and there’s no second-guessing and no bouncing ideas off another person. And that’s also the limitation.”
