Western Clear Skies: Jeff Tweedy Expands ‘Twilight Override’ Tour

In September, Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy turned in his highly anticipated solo release, the expansive and introspective triple album Twilight Override. In support of the 30-track collection, the Belleville, Ill.-bred singer-songwriter and his band of family and friends will hit the road for a third leg of appearances that draw on the new batch of music, beginning on March 10 at the Hoyt Sherman Place in Des Moines, Iowa, before heading out West.
This tour expansion comes after Tweedy, his sons, Spencer and Sammy, and fellow accompanists Macie Stewart, Liam Kazar, and Sima Cunningham return from a jaunt across the pond, which follows their current endeavors in the US Southwest. During the spring arrival of the Twilight Override Tour, the ensemble will deliver their bandleader’s compositions in Omaha, Neb., on March 11 and in Denver on March 13, before a three-stop run through Southwest locations in New Mexico and Arizona.
After spending a night in Tucson, the multifaceted quintet known for their celestial and harmonious lift on select compositions like “New Orleans,” “Blank Baby,” and others, will perform at two Los Angeles locations, The Belasco on March 20, followed by The United Theatre on March 21. They will perform concerts in Ventura and Santa Cruz before arriving in San Francisco for a two-night siege of The Fillmore on March 25 and 26.
Before making it to the Pacific Northwest, Tweedy and friends will play at the Uptown Theatre in Napa, Calif., on March 27, and at the Cascade Theatre in Redding, Calif., on March 29. The group’s highly anticipated two-night stand at Portland, Ore.’s Revolution Hall on March 31 and April 1, precedes early April dates in Vancouver and Victoria, B.C.
Upon their return to the States, Tweedy will take the stage at three Montana locations, ending on April 9 at The ELM in Bozeman. Jeff Tweedy spoke with Relix Magazine about his latest album, which demonstrates a vulnerable through line that repels the grandiose, over-baked content of the mainstream, instead breeding organic reactions to the declining state of affairs, using descriptors as motivators for signs of life.
On the road, Tweedy has been using his location to inspire debuts. During his latest run at Chickie Wah Wah in New Orleans, November 16 and 17, the musician paid tribute to the area by performing The Meters’ instrumental centerpiece, “Cissy Strut,” and Allen Toussaint’s “Last Train.” For fans of Tweedy, his recollection of Toussaint’s “Southern Nights” from Let’s Go (so We Can Get Back) adds further meaning to the choice in cover.
Tickets for the March and April shows go on sale here on Friday, November 21, at 10 am local time.
