Yesterday, Warren Haynes continued the celebration of his 2024 studio album Million Voices Whisper with a new video for “These Changes” featuring Derek Trucks. This intimate new offering continues a recent rush of collaborations between the former bandmates, who had previously gone more than 20 years without appearing together on a recording.

The new take on “These Changes” strips the standout selection back to a dual-guitar duet. Haynes provides vocals while Trucks attentively accents key moments with a melodic and emotive guitar performance. Both artists’ instruments are warm and resonant, and their voices blend perfectly into an improvised section at the end that shows the sort of telepathic instrumental communication that could only come from decades of collaboration and friendship.

Haynes and Trucks’ treatment here followed a live rendition of the song at the SOULSHINE Madison Square Garden benefit concert. Before that, the artists reunited in the studio for the official recording of the song on Million Voices Whisper. The version on that landmark project, which arrived last November via Fantasy Recordings, was among two other collaborative entries that collectively marked their first sessions together since the Allman Brothers Band’s 2003 album Hittin’ the Note. Perhaps most affecting was “Real, Real Love,” an unfinished Gregg Allman original that Haynes completed and renewed with Trucks’ instrumental talents.

“I finished it in a way that’s reflective of the way Gregg wrote and then invited Derek Trucks to be part of the recording process, which really took it to the desired next level,” Haynes shared in a press release. “I wanted to write it as if Gregg were singing it. Even in the way we approach the song as a band, and in the way I approach it as a singer, I had his presence in mind the entire time.”
