It took 10 years, but TV On The Radio have returned in full force. After announcing a 20th-anniversary reissue of the groundbreaking 2004 debut album Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes and plotting a litany of new tour dates, frontman Tunde Adebimpe now adds more fuel to the fire with the announcement of his signing to Sub Pop. Via the iconic indie label, the artist has shared the new single “Magnetic,” which marks the outset of a new solo career with a glitzy and glitchy alt-pop anthem.
Adebimpe’s new offering would be right at home among TV On The Radio’s highlights, staying true to the band’s barrage of lo-fi electric surges and tenderly disjointed melodies. Atop the rigid syncopation of a drum machine and constant flashes of bass fuzz, Adebimpe delivers a high-flying, dynamic vocal performance, amplified by other human touches like hand claps and the far-out wanderings of a retro synth. “Magnetic” is matched with an intensely intimate music video directed by the multi-hyphenate Adebimpe, who recently saw widespread acclaim for his part in Twisters.
“We heartily welcome Tunde Adebimpe to Sub Pop’s roster of artists,” label co-founder Jonathan Poneman shares in a release. “His inclusion makes the whole lot better – and a whole lot classier! We’ve waited 20-plus years for Sub Pop to earn the chance to be Tunde Adebimpe’s label.”
Anticipation for the next update on Tunde’s solo work adds to the heap of endeavors that TV On The Radio fans have to look forward to. The band’s anniversary repressing of Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes is set to arrive on Nov. 15 via Touch and Go Records, tacking five new cuts onto the original 10-song tracklist. After a surprise pop-up set that celebrated the band’s return in September, the trio of Adebimpe, Kyp Malone and Jaleel Bunton will make their first performances in five years, staging a four-night run at New York’s Webster Hall on Nov. 25, 26. 29 and 30. They’ll then close out the year with three nights at London’s Islington Assembly Hall on Dec. 10-12, before a 2025 Euro tour that includes a show with Khruangbin in April and an appearance at Primavera Sound Barcelona in June.
