Today, Tenacious D returned with a brand new song titled “Video Games,” along with an accompanying animated music video marking their first new music in five years. On the track, Jack Black sings about how he doesn’t play video games except for God of War, Fallout 4 and Red Dead Redemption 2, the last of which he compares to “fucking Shakespeare.”
The incredibly fun video traverses many worlds, including Sonic’s 8-bit Green Hill, Mario’s World 1-1, the post-apocalyptic Commonwealth, the plains of New Austin and more. As Black sings, his bandmate Kyle Gass takes on the brutal threats of each world, slowly chipping away at his body and health bar. Notably, the video was created by Oneyplays and directed by Adam Paloian (SpongeBob SquarePants, The Cuphead Show) and Chris “Oney” O’Neill (known for his Let’s Play YouTube channel Oney Plays and online animations and illustrations.)
“I have only been to 2 concerts in my life, and they were both Tenacious D shows,” shared O’Neill. “It’s a real honor to work with Jack and Kyle, although I do feel bad about shooting Kyle’s penis off via animation.”
“It’s about growing up and leaving childish things behind…. But then realizing that video games are more than just mindless toys…,” Black and Gass added. “In fact, they can be a true expression of huge ideas that belong in the pantheon of great works of art! It’s about time someone defended the honor and integrity of this bold new horizon. Leave it to the greatest band in the world… Tenacious D!!!”
