Watch: Tedeschi Trucks Band Welcome Jimmie Vaughan for Prince’s “1999” in Austin

On Friday, May 9, Tedeschi Trucks Band rolled into Austin, Texas for another striking performance in their “Live in 25!” Tour. For their second show in the Live Music Capital of the World, the twelve-piece Southern rock ensemble fronted by Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks maintained the momentum from their first night at Moody Amphitheater on Thursday–which included their reunion with longtime accompanists trumpeter Ephraim Owens and drummer J.J. Johnson–by welcoming a sit-in from the Lone Star State legend Jimmie Vaughan.
Tedeschi Trucks Band tore into their single-set performance with the live staple “Made Up Mind,” then raced ahead through other signature originals “I Am the Moon” and “Don’t Let Me Slide” before opening the catalog of the Allman Brothers-associated supergroup Derek and the Dominoes for explosive treatments of “Bell Bottom Blues” and “Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?” After selections from Hound Dog Taylor and both bandleaders’ solo catalogs, the group flipped through other essentials like “Let Me Get By” before bringing the crowd to a roar with a warm welcome to blues guitar legend Vaughan. Together with their guest, the group lent their talents to a slow-burning spin on Prince’s “1999,” which has been a regular highlight on TTB’s tour since its debut last year.
After the single-song support appearance from Vaughan–who was the second team-up of the evening after Tedeschi and Trucks sat in with their iconic opener Buddy Guy–the band wrapped its set with thrilling renditions of “Idle Wild,” Tedechi’s chart-topping “Just Won’t Burn” and a grand finale of “Bound for Glory.” For one last thank you to their fans in Austin, TTB returned to the stage for an encore of “Moon” and the Joe Cocker-popularized “Space Captain.”
Tedeschi Trucks Band will return to the stage tonight for a performance at Rogers, Ark.’s Walmart AMP, then continue on their expansive “Live in ‘25!” series with 33 further stops through Oct. 25 alongside guests and co-bills like Gov’t Mule, Whiskey Myers, Duane Betts & Palmetto Motel, Steve Winwood, Guy, Grace Potters & The Hodge Podge and more.
