Watch Now: Bruce Springsteen Previews ‘Only The Strong Survive’ with Commodores’ “Nightshift” Cover

Today, Bruce Springsteen has unveiled the second tune off his impending R&B and soul covers collection, Only The Strong Survive, with a take on the Commodores’ 1985 staple “Nightshift.” The forthcoming album is due out on Nov. 11 via Columbia Records.
Coupled with today’s audio release of “Nightshift” is the official music video for the newly recorded track, which was directed by Thom Zimny. The video features the famed artist accompanied by his band, The E Street Horns, and a full-string ensemble, which was arranged by Rob Mathes.
The original “Nightshift” was released by the Commodores in 1985 as a tribute to industry hard hitters Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson, two friends of the band, who passed away prior to the tracking of the number.
In light of the new collection of covers, the New Jersey-bred artist offered an initial statement on the release, “The music that led me to this epiphany is soul music. I put my own spin on the singing and my team mastered and sonically modernized some of the most beautiful songs in the American pop songbook.”
The “Nightshift” drop follows Springsteen’s album announcement, which occurred last month, on Sept. 29, along with the first taste of what’s to come, with his take on Frank Wilson’s “I Do Love You (Indeed I Do).” Read more.
Next on the docket for the musician he’ll take the stage at New York Comedy Music Festival as a part of the Stand Up for Heroes benefit concert before his 2023 reunion with the E-Street Band. For tickets, visit the artist’s official website.
