On June 16, Marc Maron sent a jolt through the jam community with post of the comedian alongside Trey Anastasio, fulfilling the long-held desires–or acceding to the rampant demand–of Phish and WTF fans everywhere. “Ok, it happened,” Maron captioned the post. “Now you’ll have to wait for it.”

While we wait, Maron has divulged a great deal on the forthcoming interview in the most recent session of his Sunday livestream. On the context that gave rise to the conversation, Maron shared, “A lot of people have been DMing me like, ‘You gotta talk to Trey. You gotta talk to Trey. You’d have so much to talk about.” Explaining the cause for his initial reticence, he stated, “Out of a fundamental respect for the guy’s work, if I’m not locked in with it or I don’t know about it, and it’s been going on for 40 years or something, I always felt it was a little rude.”, Anastasio’s camp enthusiastically advanced the idea of nonetheless, sharing that regardless of Maron’s relative unfamiliarity, Anastasio was “game.”

“I’ll be honest with you, I haven’t even really listened to Phish until a couple weeks ago,” Maron offered his audience. Despite this recent entry into the fold, Maron has been known for some time as a friend of the jam community; he’s testified to his love for the Dead by recounting his attendance at a Jerry Garcia concert, covering “Brokedown Palace” and famously railing against younger haters of the legendary band. As for Phish, the comedian has had the unique opportunity to learn more directly from the source; on the content of the conversation with Anastasio, Maron shared that the two carried on “A lot of recovery talk. A lot of history talk, in terms of Phish. It was good.”
