Hot on the heels of the news of their newest album, Changes, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have released a new single off the project titled “Hate Dancin’,” along with an accompanying music video directed by John Angus Stewart. Changes will arrive on Oct. 28 via the abundant Australian band’s KGLW label following two LPs that were released this month Laminated Denim and Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms And Lava.
The former is comprised of two 15-minute tracks and came less than a week ago on Wednesday, Oct. 12, while the latter, Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms And Lava, released on Oct. 7 and is comprised of seven songs each played in each of the modes of the major scale.
Changes, which will be comprised of seven tracks, was meant to be released as the band’s fifth LP of 2017, but the prolific group focused on Gumboot Soup instead. The ever-prolific ensemble instead made the call that Changes will serve as their sixth LP of 2022. “I think of Changes as a song-cycle,” shared Stu Mackenzie. “Every song is built around this one-chord progression – every track is like a variation on a theme. But I don’t know if we had the musical vocabulary yet to complete the idea at that time. We recorded some of it then, including the version of ‘Exploding Suns’ that’s on the finished album. But when the sessions were over, it just never felt done. It was like this idea that was in our heads, but we just couldn’t reach. We just didn’t know yet how to do what we wanted to do.”
The video for “Hate Dancin'” sees the band members of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard dancing and bopping with each other, free-flowing for over three minutes – a relatively short track for the group who are known for their complex long compositions and abstract, though tout approach ch to song making. Mackenzie shared, “I started writing a song about how I hate dancing, but then I realized that I love dancing,” which is apparent in the video.
