Watch: Jeff Tweedy Debuts Queen’s “Fat Bottomed Girls” in Spain
Last Saturday, Jeff Tweedy picked up the European leg of his ongoing solo tour in support of Twilight Override, the new triple album released in late September. During his most recent live appearance on Wednesday, Feb. 11, the musician, known for formidable lyrical truth-telling, took a different approach by covering Queen’s curvature-calling “Fat Bottomed Girls” for the first time.
Prior to the arrival of last night’s debut, which came during Tweedy’s four-song encore, the songwriter and guitarist touched pieces plucked off four of his solo albums, including Warm (2018), Warmer (2019), Love Is the King (2020), and his latest, Twilight Override. Also mixed into the 21-song main frame were tracks from his Tweedy family band’s 2014 delivery, Sukierae: “World Away,” “Low Key,” “Flowering,” and “Diamond Light, Pt. 1.”
The concert’s encore started with his latest delivery’s title track ahead of “Family Ghost.” Ultimately, it was the group’s take on Queen’s “Fat Bottomed Girls” that stole the show. Like the original, Tweedy and his kin-represented collaborators went with the traditional instrumentless revival of the opening lines: “Are you gonna take me home tonight?/ Oh, down beside that red firelight/ Are you gonna let it all hang out?/ Fat bottomed girls/ You make the rockin’ world go ’round,” met with Tweedy’s guitar push into the composition.
Tweedy was all smiles while launching into the rock classic lyrically led by Sima Cunningham. In addition to the concert’s namesake, he was also joined on stage by his sons Spencer and Sammy, as well as participants in Twilight Override and subsequent touring members James Elkington, Macie Stewart, and Liam Kazar.
