Eric Slick has unveiled a new studio album, titled New Age Rage, set to release on April 26 via Thirty Tigers. The Nashville-based singer-songwriter’s fourth full-length offering dissects the chaos and confusion of postmodern hard living, treating subjects like artificial intelligence and mass media manipulation with bold genre fusions and caustic wit. Slick presents this forthcoming 10-track album as his opus, and the high-concept preview track “Lose Our Minds” attests to that assertion.
“Lose Our Minds” layers a glitched-out funk with new wave tropes and lyrics forced forth by a breaking-point candor. In a conceptual reinterpretation of Prince’s “1999,” Slick pulls no punches, imploring his audience to combat everyday inanity; by pushing his patent brand of brutal realism versus pop-perfect arrangement to new levels, the artist makes manifest the endless contradictions he describes. Fittingly, the video features Slick ranting away in the street, in a hospital and outside a Chuck E Cheese. Catch the crackpot antics here.
On the new song and forthcoming project, Slick writes: “‘Lose Our Minds’ is the manifesto for New Age Rage. Everyone has gotten so impulsive and reactive, myself included. We don’t give ourselves a second to think about the consequences of our actions. This song is my way of saying, let’s shed our toxic behaviors and embrace our flaws. When you turn to dust, you become a star. Why shouldn’t we cut loose and get on the dance floor while we’re still here? Relationships are the most important thing to nurture, so I invited my whole community to contribute to this album. We threw our whole lives into it, and I’m so excited to share it with you. It’s my favorite record I’ve made yet.”
Slick’s new LP features appearances from Natalie Prass, Diane Coffee, Finom (fka OHMME), Liam Kazar and many more. The artist will support the release with a 14-stop tour across the country, beginning in Cambridge, Mass. on April 24 and ending in Portland, Ore. on May 17.
