On Friday, March 13, Tedeschi Trucks Band retook their place at New York’s Beacon Theatre in continuation of their venue-specific residency. Night three of ten marked one of live music’s most sought-after returns, particularly for deadheads. After the Thursday, March 12, sale of Jerry Garcia’s custom-made Tiger guitar, which was a part of Jim Irsay’s personal collection, auctioned by Christie’s, and sold to Bobby Tseitlin of Family Guitars, Derek Trucks was allowed to awaken the beast and make the instrument growl again.
Trucks used the Doug Irwin-crafted axe from the jump, initiating its arrival through the rumblings of Blind Willie McTell’s “Statesboro Blues.” The borrowed instrument remained in Trucks’ clutch during the group’s take on Future Soul track, “Crazy Crayin’,” I am The Moon feature “Ain’t That Something,” and a first-time cover of Barbara Lynn’s “You’ll Lose a Good Thing.” The second ever live performance of “Hero” [another feature off the group’s impending release] came next, and was followed by a cover of Chuck Willis’ “I Feel So Band.”
Next, Trucks swapped the use of Garcia’s guitar for another famous instrument, this time Frank Zappa’s “Baby Snakes” Gibson SG, which was ultimately used on “High & Mighty” and an ensuing debut and nod to the original proprietor via Zappa’s own “Willie the Pimp,” which also marked a debut. Ultimately, Trucks used Tiger during the remaining pieces of the set, “Devil Be Gone” and “Idle Wind,” which featured a tease of the Dead’s “Dark Star.”
The onset of the second frame marked a debut, the band’s first-ever cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Loving Cup.” Later on, Trucks brought out Tiger once more, providing the proper treatment to Garcia’s “Sugaree.” The aforementioned cover emerged after John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery” and followed The Allman Brothers Band’s “Dreams.”
Saturday, March 14, brought the continuation of Trucks’ Tiger demonstration, which emerged during the second half of the concert during a five-song batch, which included a return to “Crazy Cryin’,” “The Storm,” “You Can Make It If You Try” > “Everyday People,” which represented a pocket of Sly and the Family Stone originals, and ultimately their own fan favorite, “Midnight in Harlem.”
After Saturday’s show, the band took Sunday off. They will resume their Beacon residency on Wednesday, March 18. Tickets remain on sale.
