On Friday evening at the Highland Festival Grounds in Louisville, Ky., the 2024 edition of Bourbon & Beyond was underway. After commencing on Thursday, Sept. 19, with separate sets from festival participants such as Sting, Beck, Fleet Foxes, Maren Morris, Lyle Lovett, Andy Frasco & The U.N., The Sam Bush Band, and others, the audience was seasoned and prepared for another day of action in The Bluegrass State. The onset of another lively artist lineup slated for the start of the weekend brought forth Black Pumas’ stage time, extended to include a guest slot carved out for the Derek Trucks.

Leading up to one of the festival’s most talked-about moments were select songs, picked to assemble a setlist that reflected Eric Burton and Adrian Quesada’s two-part discography: their self-titled 2019 Black Pumas set and the latest semblance of studio work, 2023’s Chronicles of a Diamond. Setting the tone for the set, the group ignited their half-past 6 p.m. frame on “Fire” and extended the burn into their ensuing “Gemini Sun” and follow-up, “Ice Cream (Pay Phone).” Continuing their festival appearance with originals, they culled “You Know Better,” “Black Moon Rising,” “More Than a Love Song,” and “Angel” before inviting out their guest.

Stepping outside their own material, Black Pumas used Trucks’ arrival to beckon their one and only cover played during their festival frame. They pulled a Crazy Horse original, one that touches back to the group’s 1971 eponymous set, pulling “Dirty Dirty” as the choice number–an ideal pick considering the instrumental force of the on-stage ensemble, as demonstrated in a fan-shot clip featuring a solo section of the song from Trucks. Scroll down to watch a video from the sit-in.

Following the Trucks sit-in, Black Pumas concluded their set after “OCT 33” and “Colors.” Later that evening, Tedeschi Trucks Band took the stage for their festival stage, delivering a mixture of covers and originals sans guests.
