David Gilmour is solidly among that rare class of artists whose love of music outranks their want for laurels. The legendary Pink Floyd proved this standing yet again on Monday, Sept. 9, when he delivered his first public performance in four years–in the back of a seaside East Sussex pub. Gilmour’s return to the small, carpeted stage precedes his long-awaited first live series since 2016’s Rattle That Lock Tour, which will bring the artist to 21 dates in Europe and the U.S. from Sept. 27 to Nov. 10.

On Monday night, Gilmour’s daughter Romany was booked for an intimate gig at The Neptune Live Music Bar in Hove, East Sussex when the psychedelic pathbreaker sauntered onstage for an acoustic duet. “Very much enjoyed crashing [Romany]’s gig at the Neptune in Hove this evening after finishing tour rehearsals,” the artist wrote in a Twitter post. Gilmour also relayed a video of his daughter beckoning him to the stage, followed by a recording of the chorus of their ensuing treatment of “Wish You Were Here.” Watch this memorable intergenerational match-up below.

Gilmour will take the stage again at the end of the month for a Sept. 27 set at Rome’s Circus Maximus, setting off his first proper headline tour in eight years. After six nights at the Italian venue, Gilmour will return to London’s hallowed Royal Albert Hall for six shows from Oct. 9 to Oct. 25. Promptly following this European sprint, the artist will jet to Los Angeles for three shows at the Hollywood Bowl from Oct. 29 to 31, then wrap up his run with a five-night residency at New York’s Madison Square Garden from Nov. 4 to Nov. 10.
