On Tuesday, July 8, Dave Matthews Band took their Summer Tour to the Budweiser Stage in Toronto. During the performance at the open-air concert venue on Lake Ontario, the ensemble placed the Mark Batson co-write, “Steady As We Go,” in the setlist’s 15th position. Its arrival marked a return, ending a 186-show gap since the last live inclusion.
Before “Steady As We Go” surfaced later in the night, the ensemble began with a healthy offering on concert staples, beginning with “Ants Marching,” before sweeping in “The Best of What’s Around,” “Walk Around the Moon,” “You Never Know” and “Lie in Our Graves.” “Spoon” preluded the first sign of something to come through the arrival of “Joyride,” another inclusion off Stand Up [the same album that rendered “Steady As We Go”].
The single set display brought out band anthems like “Jimi Thing,” “#41,” before Matthews referenced his solo repertoire on “So Damn Lucky,” positioned ahead of David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance.” “Steady As We Go” was dusted off next. Before last night, it had not been included on a setlist since November 19, 2022.
The track, a relatively irregular concert inclusion, has experienced waves of live popularity before last night’s return, including seven performances in 2022, six in 2018, and a single run-through in 2014. It was shelved from 2006 to 2014, yet received the most attention the year of its release [2005], when it was played a total of 31 times.
Before ending their time in Toronto, the band used the remaining minutes to work on “What Would You Say” and “Two Step.” Matthews took the stage solo to start the evening’s encore, ultimately receiving support from the other players for their final number, “Drive In, Drive Out.”
After last night’s concert in Toronto, DMB is scheduled to perform tonight, July 9 at Pine Knob Music Theatre in Clarkston, Mich. Tickets remain on sale.
