Watch: Dave and Violet Grohl Cover “At Seventeen” for Fourth Release of Hanukkah Sessions

Last night, Dave Grohl and his daughter Violet, along with producer Greg Kurstin shared their cover of Janis Ian’s beautiful song “At Seventeen” for the fourth installment of this year’s Hanukkah Sessions. Like the previous releases, the performance was filmed on Dec. 5 at Largo in Los Angeles; the fourth video follows covers of songs by 10cc, P!nk with Blood, Sweat & Tears along with Inara George and P!nk with Judd Apatow.

The video was not the first time the public has seen Violet Grohl’s ability to move and captivate through her voice as she performed at both of the Taylor Hawkins tribute concerts back in September. For the Hannukah performance, she took center stage, seated with a guitar; her father was perched to the left of her, handling drums, while Kurstin manned keyboards to the right of her spinning the song upwards and downwards with jazzy crescendos rising from a grand piano. The performance is further lifted by a horn section that softly breathes from behind the older Grohl.

The description for the video on YouTube reads, “Born Janis Eddy Fink, a 23-year-old Janis Ian wrote one of the all time classic coming of age anthems ‘At Seventeen’—here it is as interpreted by Violet Grohl.”

It’s notable that along with all the performances slowly being rolled out over the Festival of Lights this week, the benefit concert which took place on Dec. 5 was in benefit of the Anti-Defamation League and saw performances by Tenacious D, Karen O and more – it also was the first time the sessions were recorded in front of a live audience since its inception in 2020.
