Billy Strings’ Ionia Freak Fair was a success on all counts. The sold out event at the Ionia County Fairgrounds in Ionia, MI featured all manner of performances and experiences over the course of its two days.
One of many unexpected moments took place on Saturday night when Montreal’s death metal innovators Cryptopsy headlined the Pyramid Scheme Pinball and Metal Tent. Strings himself attended the performance and guested with the group on “Open Face Surgery.” The next day Strings posted a clip with the title, “Can not believe I got to play with Cryptopsy.”
Apparently he was hankering for more because on Sunday Cryptopsy appeared at the Pyramid Scheme in Grand Rapids. As the group’s Matt McGachy told the crowd, “We had a good fucking time yesterday. I expected that was it.” However he then revealed that Strings was in attendance, adding,“You know why? Because he wants to fucking play with us again. If you missed us last night, you're very fucking lucky to be here right now. Make some fucking noise for our very good fucking friend, Billy fucking Springs.”
