On Saturday, Feb. 22, Warren Haynes Band pulled into the Town Ballroom in Buffalo, N.Y. The latest stop on the Million Voices Whisper tour, titled after Haynes’ 2024 solo effort by the same name. The occasion yielded specialty moments that appealed to the bandleader’s Gov’t Mule roots with the inclusion of Danny Louis, who sat in for the entirety of the concert.
Louis’ Gov’t Mule history extends back to 2002. The keyboardist initially contributed to the band’s 2004 studio set, Déjà Voodoo, and continued adding his mark to the group’s follow-ups. Saturday’s show allowed the keyboardist/ multi-instrumentalist to flex his prowess on Hayne’s solo work, in addition to Gov’t Mule standards and associated covers.
“Man in Motion” served as the night’s jumping-off point, which allowed Hayne to unload masterful guitar riffs over Louis’ gospel-tinged output. The band coalesced their instrumental might across follow-ups “Fire In The Kitchen,” “Banks Of The Deep End,” and the night’s initial Million Voices Whisper pull, “This Life As We Know It.”
Haynes dusted off his Jerry Garcia response piece “Patchwork Quilt” for the first time in a while before nodding to The Band on “Stage Fright.” With Louis’ instrumental backing, they worked through the Million Voices Whisper piece “Real, Real Love,” a track initially recorded with featured help from the bandleader’s Allman Brothers bandmate, Derek Trucks.
As if recognizing the roots of his relationship with Trucks, Haynes followed up with The Allman Brothers Band’s “Dreams” and early aughts contribution, “Instrumental Illness,” before kicking into the second set fueled the same motif on “Soulshine.” Returning to his Million Voice Whisper material, Haynes led the band through “Go Down Swinging” before effectively acknowledging Louis’ placement with Gov’t Mule favorites, “Beautifully Broken” and “Invisible.”
The encore brought a return to Haynes’ new solo LP, “Till the Sun Comes Shining Through,” and one last ode to new music and the tour’s namesake.
