Over the weekend, Umphrey’s McGee took the stage in Boulder, Colo. for a long-awaited, sold-out series at the Boulder Theater. Over three nights and six sets, the pioneering progressive jam quintet set their 2026 Sky’s The Limit Tour off from a high point, embedding a litany of live surprises into some powerful performances.
After embarking on their three-night stand with a stacked straight-ahead show on Thursday night, Umphrey’s McGee returned on Friday for a follow-up with “Gurgle,” the standout from their 2021 studio album, You Walked up Shaking in Your Boots but You Stood Tall and Left a Raging Bull. The band effortlessly merged down to “The Floor,” then shortly after blazed into the set-break with a towering, non-stop medley of “Intentions Clear,” ”The Crooked One,” “Unevolved,” a resurrected cover of Mötley Crüe’s “Dr. Feelgood” (last played in Sept. 2022) and finally “Unevolved.”
Umphrey’s McGee’s second set started with a tangle of “Red Tape,” then gave way to a jammed pairing of “All In Time” and “Hangover” before former Disco Biscuits drummer and scene veteran Allen Aucoin sat in on the drums for UM’s signature “The Triple Wide.” Aucoin’s short and sweet guest spot ended when the quintet’s new drummer Scotty Zwang returned to hold down a live debut ot Blue’s “Song 2.” After another extended improvisatory sequence landed on a soaring reprise of “All In Time,” the band capped off night two with an encore of “Higgins.”
On Saturday, Umphrey’s McGee returned recharged for a grand finale to the run, beginning with a race-pace rendition of “Domin Theory.” the band slapped a tease of Rush’s “The Spirit of Radio” onto “Puppet string,” then ripped through to the ntermission with “Concessions,” bisected and packed with the two-decade fan-favorite “2nd Self.”
Umphrey’s McGee rolled into their final set in Boulder with the Similar Skin “jimmy stewart” “Bridgeless,” which gave way to a spiraling three-song sequence of “Staircase,” “Much Obliged” and “Partyin’ Peeps.” Saxophonist Nick Gerlach, of The Cutlet and a co-host on Andy Frasco’s World Saving Podcast, bolstered the Mantis album opener and deep cut “Made to Measure,” as well as UM’s first cover of Peter Gabriel’s hit “Sledgehammer” since May 2019. The core band wrapped up their set with a sprint through “Escape Goat” and “Glory,” then finally concluded the residency with a reverential tribute to the late Bob Wier through a live debut of the Grateful Dead’s “One More Saturday Night.”
Umphrey’s McGee will perform next tomorrow, Jan. 21, at Kansas City, Mo.’s VooDoo Lounge, then make 30 further stops across the country before flying out to their inaugural Deep Dive destination festival in April. Find tickets and UM’s full live itinerary at umphreys.com.
