Umphrey’s McGee Offer Guest Heavy Weekend, Welcome Holly Bowling, Lespecial’s Rory Dolan and Kanika Moore at Northlands Music & Arts Festival

Following their appearance with moe. on Friday, June 13, Umphrey’s McGee proceeded with their independent weekend schedule by arriving at Higher Ground in South Burlington, Vt., on Saturday, June 14. They were joined by regional native Chris Friday, [Phish associate and former Higher Ground production manager], who assisted the band on the debut of Vincent Gargiulo’s “Taste the Biscuits.” The band proceeded with their Northlands stand on Sunday, teaming up with special guests and offering an additional debut.

Umphrey’s McGee’s Saturday arrival at Higher Ground produced a heavy focus on originals from the jump, with “In the Kitchen,” “Muche’s Odyssey,” and “Professor Wormbog.” The latter merged into “Cemetery Walk” and “Cemetery Walk II,” which functioned as an extended stroll before bursting into a longtime concert standard, “Utopian Fir,” which was ultimately divided allowing for the insertion of the concert debut, the aforementioned “Taste the Biscuits,” with Friday leading vocals.

The band locked in a second set, which included Talking Heads’ “Girlfriend Is Better,” amid originals, ultimately closing the show after “Big Lights, Bug City.” Umphrey’s continued their weekend with two sets and an encore at the Northlands Music Festival in Swanzey, N.H., where they welcomed guests and offered a debut. At this gig, the band brought out Holly Bowling to sit with their own Joel Cummins on “JaJunk,” the Hall of Fame feature included a tease of the Top Gun theme before its completion.

Before turning in their first set, Umphrey’s current touring drummer, Scotty Zwang, swapped spots with Lespecial’s Rory Dolan, who kept time on “Believe the Lie” and helped assert a tease of Miles Davis’ “In a Silent Way.” Ultimately, the band welcomed Kanika Moore, Ryan Stastik’s former Doom Flamingo bandmate, to help add AC/DC’s “It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll)” into their archive for the first time. Before ending their time at the festival, UM positioned “Glory” with “Puppet String” as the official final movement of their Northlands appearance.
