Umphrey’s McGee Honor Bob Weir with “Jack Straw” Debut

Umphrey’s McGee took the stage in Aspen, Colo., last night to finish off a two-night stand commencing their 2026 Sky’s The Limit Tour. With their second performance at Belly Up Aspen, the groundbreaking progressive rock sextet flew through a litany of old hits and paid tribute to the late legend Bob Weir with a debut Grateful Dead cover.
Umphrey’s McGee got cooking on Wednesday night with their classic Anchor Drops jam vehicle “In the Kitchen,” then served up a second helping of “Deeper,” bridged seamlessly into “Hiccup.” After digging into their ninth-ever treatment of the shapeshifting Ali Baba’s Tahini track “Pork Chop Pie,” UM took a beat, then lit up their two-decade setlist staple “FF” and “Draconian.” A high-energy rendition of David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” closed the first frame on an exuberant high note.
Recharged from the intermission, Ummphrey’s McGee returned for their second set with the longtime live favorite “Utopian Fir,” then merged into an ode to their dearly departed jam forebearer with a debut of the Grateful Dead’s “Jack Straw.” The Bob Weir-penned and helmed Europe ‘72 essential was UM’s first Dead cover since their bust-out of “Althea” last August, and like most of their presentations of that classic, it was delivered as an expansive interstitial cut between two phases of “Utopian Fir.”
Umphrey’s McGee wrapped up their main set with a medley of “Wappy Strawberry” and “40’s Theme,” then let the lights go down before an explosive encore of “Cemetery Walk II.” The band will return to the spotlight tonight for the first of three shows at Boulder, Colo.’s Boulder Theater, then race through 33 more stops across the country before flying out to their inaugural Deep Dive destination festival in April.
