Umphrey’s McGee Dish Out Debut Original on Second Night in Portland, Welcome Saxophonist Sean McLean
On Thursday, March 19, Umphrey’s McGee took the stage at Revolution Hall in Portland, Ore. The band’s most recent live appearance represented their second and final night at the Rose City location. Notably, Jake Cinninger remained absent, following the March 9 news that he would be taking a “necessary leave of absence for personal reasons” during their March run. The latest stop on the Sky’s The Limit Tour began with a debut original and later included accompaniment from visiting saxophonist Sean McLean.
As mentioned, last night’s concert started with a bang via the first-ever performance of their new original “Cocoa Butter,” which kicked off a sequence that brought forth “Sociable Jimmy” and “Nemo.” The ensemble paused before proceeding into “The Floor,” followed by a segue of “Kimble” into “Red Tape.” Umphrey’s McGee closed their initial batch of songs with a nod to weekend precursor, “Bad Friday.”
The second half of the concert kicked off with the band bopping through originals, “Puppet String” into “Wappy Sprayberry,” before eventually resurfacing on the set’s de facto starting point. Next, Umphrey’s McGee welcomed special guest saxophonist McLean to assist on two numbers. Notably, the New Orleans mainstay is in town for a gig with his band at Southeast Portland’s Goodfoot venue this weekend.
During McLean’s guest slot, he assisted Umphrey’s McGee on “Made to Measure” as well as “Can’t Go for That (No Can Do).” Following their time with the added player, the band fused “Attachments” with “Staircase” as their final second set movements. The concert’s encore consisted of a cover of Frank Zappa’s “Dirty Love” and their own “The Fussy Dutchman.”
After their latest live show, Umphrey’s McGee will continue the West Coast leg of their Sky’s The Limit Tour at Seattle’s Showbox. Tickets remain on sale.
