Over the weekend, Umphrey’s McGee journeyed down to the subterranean stage of The Caverns of Pelham, Tenn. In the sonorous acoustics of the natural amphitheater, the pioneering progressive rock outfit unleashed another two-set selection of ever-expanding old favorites. To take their return to the distinguished venue beyond their routine, the band added a long-dormant original and a new Fugazi cover.
Three days into the latest leg of their spring tour, Umphrey’s McGee set off their show in The Caverns with their second rendition ot date of “Cocoa Butter,” an original that they debuted at Portland’s Revolution Hall back in March, then bolted into the boisterous essential “Push the Pig.” After a medley of “Prowler” and ”Red Tape,” the quintet – still sans co-founding guitarist Jake Cinninger – worked their way into “Muff II: The Revenge” and “Tempted.” The band’s fourth cover of Squeeze’s new wave classic “Tempted,” last played in August 2016 unraveled into the fastidious regimentation of Jimmy Stewart and Blueprints cut “Wide Open” to close out the first frame.
UM kicked down the door in their second set with the tried-and-true combo of “Divisions” and “1348,” stretched out to a combined 34 minutes. “The Triple Wide” swooped in and spirited the band to their debut rendition of Fugazi’s 13 Songs heavy-hitter “Give Me the Cure,” then a rapid-fire rotation of “Resolution,” “Nothing Too Fancy” and “Divisions” closed out the set. For an encore, the band turned to the near-nightly fan-favorite “Puppet String.”
Before launching their first tour since their Deep Dive destination event on May 22, Umphrey’s McGee shared a brief update on Cinninger’s status. A text post shared to the band’s social channels reads, “We wanted to let everyone know that Jake will remain off the road for the time being. Thanks for your continued support.” The recent update was the first offered by the band since the guitarist stepped away just before their March West Coast tour. At the time, UM suggested that Cinninger’s absence would only last through the end of March, taking “a necessary leave of absence for personal reasons. We love him immensely and support him completely.”
