The Tallest Man On Earth Unveils Covers Album ‘Too Late for Edelweiss’

Today, The Tallest Man On Earth shared he will release a new covers album entitled Too Late for Edelweiss on Friday, Sept. 23, via Anti-. The 10-track LP will include covers of songs written and made famous by Lucinda Williams, Yo La Tengo, Bon Iver, The National, Hank Williams, and more.

The Tallest Man On Earth, born Kristian Matsson, titled the project after fellow Swedish musician Håkan Hellström’s “För sent för Edelweiss,” which serves as the project’s opening cover. Too Late for Edelweiss was recorded in Matsson’s native Sweden and State Side studio in North Carolina between sessions for a compilation of original works that’s yet to be announced.

“This past year, I’ve spent a lot of time touring but also writing and recording an album that I’m wildly proud of and will see the light of day eventually. But in the small hours in between trips and sessions, mostly in my house in Sweden and an Airbnb in North Carolina, I lo-fi recorded some covers here and there,” shared Matsson in a statement. “Many times as a reset button for my own songwriting, to cleanse the palate from my whirlpool mind while writing songs. A little document of songs I had on my mind during those nights.”

In celebration of the album announcement, Matsson released a cover of Hank Williams’ “Lost Highway.” The song is frequently accredited to Texas’ Leon Payne, who released his take on the song in 1948. However, Williams’ rendition of the song, which was released the following year on an album of the same name, has been covered by the likes of Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, and more and has become the de facto gold standard.

With a covers album just days away and a new project on the horizon, Matsson seems more than ready to set out on tour, and the musician has dates scheduled for Europe and the UK starting in April 2023, with stops in Paris, Amsterdam, Milan, Berlin, Dublin, London, and more before shows in his homeland of Sweeden in Malmö, Stockholm, and Gothenburg.
