On June 18 and 19, The Disco Biscuits rolled into Woodstock, N.Y.’s historic Bearsville Theater for Camp Home Again, the latest in a long-running tradition of signature festivals and events. In the course of the two-day fan-gathering, the band celebrated 30 years on the forefront of jamtronica with a packed program of top-tier performances, very special bonus sets and other intimate encounters with their community.

In the cozy enclosure of the newly renovated, 500-person capacity Bearsville Theater, The Disco Biscuits welcomed their audience on Wednesday and sanctified the space with an insightful guided meditation session led by drummer Allen Aucoin. Following this peaceful introduction and a TRACTORBEAM instructional workshop from keyboardist Aron Magner and Touchdowns All Day’s Max Dawson, the evening’s music program rolled in a SuperJam set stacked with guests from The Disco Biscuits’ community of friends and peers. Ace bassist Karina Rykman, Lotus’ Mike Greenfield, Brothers Past’s Tom McKee and Tom Hamilton of Joe Russo’s Almost Dead joined forces for some fearlessly joyful noise, featuring sit-ins from Magner and guitarist Jon Gutwillig.

The Disco Biscuits stormed the stage for their first full show of the residency with the Revolution in Motion concluding cliffhanger “To Be Continued…,” which quickly locked into the punching bass of Tiesto cover “BOOM” and an inverted treatment of the longtime setlist staple “Above the Waves.” Following an unfinished run of “Better in Doses,” led by some commanding guitar heroics from Gutwillig, the band slipped back into “To Be Continued…” to wrap their first frame.

The band’s second set rolled in with another certified classic as “Basis for a Day” gave bassist Marc Brownstein a chance to blast through a mix of heavy effects that set a floor-filling pulse for “Fire Will Exchange,” featuring a prominent sample of Eliza Rose and Interplanetary Criminal’s drum & bass hit “B.O.T.A.” Another viral contemporary electronic selection came with the band’s fresh treatment of Sub Focus and bbyclose’s “On and On,” which upped the tempo into a parabolic return to “Basis for a Day.” For a final blast in night one, the group merged “Postcard” into an epic rendition of “Also Sprach Zarathustra” in the encore.

Last night, The Disco Biscuits’ second day of Camp Home Again commenced with another meditation and instructional workshop, the latter comprising a masterclass on improvisation from the full band. This discussion got the wheels turning for a fully improvised set conducted by Matt Butler of Everyone Orchestra, who led the group through spacey, contemplative passages and exhilarating techno-inflected peaks. With this heady foundation laid, the quartet locked into a first song-focused set that showed all players at the peak of their powers, with highlights like an inverted “No Recollection,” hypnotic “Under Ur Spell” and dyslexic finale of “Astronaut.”

That last blast of the first frame came back around in the second after “House Dog Party” and “Who’s in Charge,” when the band conjured the familiar mixed-up tones of their 24-year essential. More twisted interpretation followed with an inverted run of “Ring the Doorbell Twice,” which bent back into a set-closing “House Dog Party” and ultimate triumphant encore of “Scars of the Brave” and “Caterpillar.”

The Disco Biscuits will return to the stage tomorrow, June 21 with a performance at Rothbury, Mich.’s Electric Forest Festival; find tickets and more information at discobiscuits.com.
