Today, the Grammy Award-winning ensemble, Tedeschi Trucks Band, helmed by the partnered pair, Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, has unveiled the second single off their forthcoming sixth studio album, Future Soul, due out on Friday, March 20. Today’s preview, “Who Am I,” sonically harkens to the group’s hit “Midnight in Harlem,” while also blazing a new trail, one that’s bound for the rural South, rather than the Big Apple borough.
“Who Am I” was written by the married duo with two of the band’s chief songwriters, Mike Mattison and Gabe Dixon, and arrives on the heels of the group’s initial album preview, “I Got You.” True to the Tedeschi Trucks Band’s capacity, their new track radiates warmth, melting the listener like butter on a piping-hot biscuit. There’s also a sense of rearview reflection that courses through the delivery and pushes for nibbles and consideration as opposed to a mouthful of predetermined meaning.
“‘Who Am I’ feels a little bit like a dream to me,” shares Trucks. “The riff came naturally to me one of the mornings that we were all writing together up at our farm in Georgia. Susan immediately came up with the opening vocal melody and lyric and Gabe really took it to a beautiful place from there. It feels biographical and a bit surreal at the same time. I always love when a song can put you in between worlds.”
Future Soul was produced by Mike Elizondo (Twenty One Pilots, Eminem, Dr. Dre, Carrie Underwood) and co-produced by one half of the band’s namesake, Trucks. The 11-track collection was recorded at the couple’s own Swamp Raga Recording in Jacksonville, Fla., and at Phantom Studios in Gallatin, Tenn.
The set of new music represents a candid and sincere full-band collaboration that draws on written contributions from Trucks, Tedeschi, Mattison, Dixon, and Tyler Greenwell. Sonically, the album spans a variety of influences, including the title-alluded-to funk, rock-and-roll tendencies, and blues, soul, and punk elements.
