Last evening the Tedeschi Trucks Band performed the third night of their four show run in Chicago. The group’s appearance at the Chicago Theater offered some guest musicians as well as some special instruments.
Midway through the show, thanks to Family Guitars, Susan Tedeschi switched over to Mike Bloomfield’s 1963 Fender Telecaster. Bloomfield had played the instrument during the historic “Dylan Goes Electric” performance at the Newport Folk Festival on July 25, 1965. Tedeschi wielded the guitar during a run from the TTB original “I Want More” into Frank Zappa’s “Willie The Pimp.”
Later on, during the band’s encore, Derek Trucks appeared on Lonnie Mack's 1958 Gibson Flying V, which is known as “Number 7." He played this during “Got To Get Better In A Little While,” the Eric Clapton composition from his Derek & the Dominos days. On this tune the TTB was joined by Tuck Ryan, who is a member of Cris Jacobs’ group, which opened the evening.
Jacobs, himself, had guested with the Tedeschi Trucks Band for the final three songs of the set. He appeared on guitar for a version of the Rolling Stones’ “Loving Cup” which led into Sleepy John Estes’ “Leaving Trunk” and then Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s “Volunteered Slavery.”
The TTB will close out their Chicago Theatre residency this evening.
