Last night, Tedeschi Trucks Band returned to New York’s Beacon Theater for the fourth show of their six-night run at the historic venue. The latest performance of the celebrated Southern rock ensemble’s Live in ‘25 Tour was their last with support from the blues legend Buddy Guy, who has opened for 10 stops since the tour’s outset in early May. After several sit-ins along the way, Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks took a beat at Beacon to send off the icon and thank him for both his accompaniment on the road and lifetime of musical achievement.

Thursday’s performance began with an introductory set from Guy, who offered up a wealth of traditional classics from his catalog like “Damn Right, I’ve Got the Blues,” “I’m You Hoochie Coochie Man,” “I Just Want to Make Love to You” and “Chicken Heads,” plus greener covers like John Hiatt’s “Feels Like Rain,” Eddie Boyd’s “Five Long Years” and a three-track medley of Little Milton’s “Grits Ain’t Groceries,” Cream’s “Sunshine of Your Love” and Al Green’s “Take Me to the River.” After a finale of “Cheaper to Keep Her,” Tedeschi and Trucks joined the bluesman on stage after a brief intermission for a special acoustic collaboration.

“I just want to say, it’s been an amazing tour playing with Buddy for the last several weeks,” Tedeschi addressed the crowd. “It’s been an absolute honor and a pleasure. Derek had the good idea that we should sit around and play a little acoustic with Buddy for one song. So, he’s gonna come out with us. We’re sure gonna miss him.”

Before tearing into the headline set, Tedeschi and Trucks helped revive a classic from Guy’s expansive discography with the blues standard “I’m in the Mood,” originated by the great John Lee Hooker in 1951 and recorded by Guy on Going Back to Acoustic, his 1981 live record with Wells. The tender, stirring 10-minute treatment elicited a roaring response from the audience and teed up a powerful set from TTB, which featured covers of George Harrison, Blind Joe Reynolds, Derek and the Dominoes, Taj Mahal, the Allman Brothers Band, Jeff Beck and Bobby “Blue” Bland. Tedeschi Trucks Band will return to the stage tonight and tomorrow to wrap their Beacon run, then take two months away from the stage before picking up the Live in ‘25 Tour at the end of July. Find tickets and more information at tedeschitrucksband.com/tour.
