Longtime collaborators and former bandmates Jason Isbell and Patterson Hood reunited at Miramar Beach, FL’s Sun, Sand & Soul on Friday. Event curators Tedeschi Trucks Band traditionally do not headline Sun, Sand & Soul’s middle day, so the festival’s lineup consisted of Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit, Isbell’s former band Drive-By Truckers and Elles Bailey.
During Isbell’s main-stage closing spot, Drive-by Truckers co-founder Hood emerged during the encore to sit in on “Outfit,” an Isbell-penned tune from the Truckers’ 2003 classic, Decoration Day. Hood then remained on stage to help Isbell and 400 Unit through Wings’ “Let me Roll With It.” Despite playing “Outfit” over 200 times live, the Truckers dropped the song after Isbell left the band in 2007 and have not played it as a proper show since.
Isbell recently reunited with the Truckers for a special appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in December to celebrate the reissued release of Decoration Day. Hood also made sit in waves when he joined Wednesday for a take on Big Star’s “September Gurls” at Portland, OR’s Revolution Hall, near where he currently resides, on April 22.
In other Sun, Sand & Soul news, event performer Molly Tuttle also sat in with Tedeschi Trucks Band during their marquee set yesterday. Tuttle, who was on the bill, emerged for a take on Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right.”
