In February, Sturgill Simpson announced Mutiny After Midnight, his second studio album as Johnny Blue Skies. In a letter mailed to his fans and posted to his social channels, the unpredictable country-rock pathbreaker detailed that his follow-up to 2024’s Passage Du Desir would radically sidestep expectations with “a dance record… The dance of all creation,” limited exclusively to vinyl and CD. Last night, just under two weeks out from the physical formats’ March 13 release via Atlantic Outpost, Simpson zagged again, posting the entire album to YouTube.
“Ooops,..mighta just posted the whole fuk’n album on YouTube….for the real ones,” Simpson posted to his Instagram story.
So just days after dispatching some early LPs to undisclosed record stores across the country, which fans quickly tracked down and, in some cases, listed to eBay, Simpson’s full album with his Dark Clouds band is out for all to hear. Turns out he wasn’t overstating the significance of the left turn in his sound; across the nine-track, 45-minute epic, the singer-songwriter and his road-hardened band of drummer Miles Miller, guitarist Laur Joanets, bassist Kevin Black and keyboardist and saxophonist Robbie Crowell strut into smoked-out, neon-drenched scenes that refit their rough and tumble country tendencies for prowling disco rhythms. It may be the most radical divergence in his famously unpredictable catalog, and despite its slapdash album cycle, the rich detail and meticulous genre syntheses throughout betray thorough consideration.
Simpson’s seventh studio offering was cut at Dan Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound Studios in Nashville. Through the set, he lays out unflinching reflections on trying times and strives to outmaneuver modern social ills with music inspired by tour bus obsessions, including ‘70s fusion supergroup Stuff and Marvin Gaye’s 1981 concept album In Our Lifetime. The project also marks the alt-country star’s return to Atlantic, which released his Grammy-winning breakthrough A Sailor’s Guide to Earth in 2016, and clearly, he’s already making good use of the arrangement’s newfound freedoms.
Johnny Blue Skies & the Dark Clouds’ Mutiny after Midnight is available to order on vinyl, CD, and cassette now. Hear the project in full below.
